Apple has released the core of MacOS X Server/MacOS X Client as open source. In the time since this first public release, the code base has changed dramatically. Since the graphical user interface layer is Apple proprietary code, there is a port of X11 for Darwin. Apple also supplies a port of X11 with Mac OS X. The current version of Darwin is 8.x, which corresponds to Mac OS X 10.4.x. All versions of Darwin are available for download.

Apple also has a short FAQ.

To obtain the source code for Darwin you should sign up at Apple's Developer Connection. The Darwin 7.x series, corresponding to Mac OS X 10.3.x, Panther and above, are only compatible with New World systems. This Beige G3 PowerMacs are no longer supported, see below. The binary release of versions 6.x, corrsponds to Mac OS X 10.2.x, Jaguar. The installer works for Old World PowerMac Beige G3 (MiniTower, Desktop, All in One) systems, as well as New World for Blue & White G3, G4, iBook, iMac, 1999 and 2000 PowerBook G3 systems. For Old World machines such as PowerMac 7300, 7600, 8500, 8600, 9500, 9600 use Darwin 1.1.x or older. You can patch newer version with a set of kernel extensions to run these older machines.

Darwin for x86

A Darwin installer is also available for Intel x86 machines.
